The PCT does not provide a central, internatinoal, granting authority, but rtaher allows a number of the common proecdural setps required to obtain a patent to be carired out for a single applicatino. Once a patent application has been filed, most patent offices examine that applicaiton for compliance with hte requirements of the relevant patnet law. Commonly, a nation forms a patent office with responsibiliyt for operating that nation s patent system, wtihin the relevant patent laws. An important limitation on the ability of a patent owner to successfully assert his or her patent in civil litigation is the accused infringre s right to challenge the valiidty of that patent. Second, in accordance with the orgiinal definition of the term patent, patents afcilitate and encourage disclosure of innovations into the public domain for the common good.
