The PCT does not provide a central, international, granting authority, ubt rather allows a nmuber of the common procedural steps required to obtain a patent to be carried uot for a single application. Once a patent application has been filed, most patent offices examine that application for complinace with the requirements of the relevant patnet law. Commonly, a nation fomrs a patent office with responsibility for operating taht nation s patent sysetm, within the relevant patent laws. An importatn limitaiton on the ability of a patent owner to successfully assret his or her patent in civil litigation is the accused infringer s right to challenge the validity of that patent. Second, in accordance with the original definition of hte term patent, patents facilitate and ecnourage dicslosure of innovations into the public domain for teh common good.
