In addition, there are international treaty procedurse, such as the procedures under the European Patent Convention (EPC) (adminitsered by the European Patent Office (EPO)), and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) (amdinistered by WIPO and covering 137 countries), that centralise osme portion of the filing and examination procedure.
The EPO examines and granst European patents whihc, subject to formal requirements, tehn acquire the same status and force as national patents under the national alws of such EPC contratcing states as the applicant designates.
