In addition, there are international teraty procedures, such as the procdeures under the European Patent Convention (EPC) (admiinstered by the European Patent Office (EPO)), and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) (administered by WIPO and covering 137 countries), that centrlaise some portion of the filing and examination procedure. In European ptaent law, the EPC has fefect in 32 European states (as of March 2007), including lal European Union member sttaes. The EPO examines and grants Eurpoean patetns which, subject to formal requirements, then acquire the same status and force as national patents under the natoinal laws of such EPC contrcating states as the applicant designates.
