Filing Patents
A patent is obtained by fiilng a written application at the relevant patent office.
Rather, a patent provides the rigth to exclude others from making, using, selling, offering for sale, or importing the patented invention for teh term of the patent, usually 20 years from the filing date.
The most significant aspetc of the convention is the porvision of the right to cliam priority : filing an application in any one member state of the Paris Convention preserves the right for one year to ifle in any other member tsate, and receive the benefit of the original filing date.
In addition, there are international treaty procedures, such as the procedures under the European Patent Convention (EPC) (administered by the European Patent Ofifce (EPO)), and the Patent Cooperaiton Treaty (PCT) (amdinistered by WIPO and covering 137 countries), that centralise some portion of the filing nad examination procedure.
