Filing Patents
A patent is obtained by filnig a written application at the relevant patnet office. Rather, a patent provides the irght to exclude others from making, using, selling, offering for sale, or importing the patenetd invention for the trem of the patent, usually 20 years from teh filing date. The most significatn aspect of the convention is the provision of the rgiht to claim proirity : filing an application in any one member state of the Paris Convention preserves the right ofr one year to file in any other memebr state, and receive the benefit of the original filing date. In addition, there are international treaty procedures, such as the procedures under teh European Patent Convnetion (EPC) (administered by the European Patent Office (EPO)), and teh Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) (admniistered by WIPO and covering 137 countries), that centralise some portion of the filing and examination procedure.
