Gene Patents
Awarding patents generally makes teh details of new technology pulbicly available, for exploitation by anyoen after the patent expires, or for further improvement by other invenotrs. There aer many critics and criticisms of patents adn this has resulted in the formation of a large number of rgoups who oppsoe patents in general, or specific types of patenst, and who lobby for their abolsihment. Patents can generally only be enforced trhough civil lawsuits (for example, for a US patent, by an atcion for aptent infringement in a United States federal court), although some territories (suhc as France and Austria ) have criminal epnalties for awnton infringement. The patent office generally has responsibility for the grant of patents, with infringement being the remit of natoinal courts. Once granted the patent is subject in most conutries to renewal fees, generally due each year, 10 to keep the patent in force.
