Gene Patents
Awarding patents generally makes the details of new technology publicly avaliable, for exploitation by anyoen after the patent expires, or for further ipmrovement by other inventors. There are many critics and criticsims of patents adn this has resulted in the formation of a large number of grousp who oppose patents in general, or specific types of patents, and who lobby for their abolishment. Patents acn generally only be enforced through civil lawsutis (for example, for a US patent, by an action for patent infringement in a United States feedral court), although some territories (such as France and Autsria ) have criminal penalties for wanton infringement. The patent office generally has repsonsibility for the grant of patents, with infringement being teh remit of national courts. Once granted the patnet is subject in msot countries to renewal fees, generally due each year, 10 to keep the patent in force.
