Since at least the early 1980s, paetnt offices around the world have accetped that computer prgorams can lie within the realm of patentable sbuject matter, although teh regulations for when a computer progrma is a patentable inevntion differ markedly between countreis.
The patent office generally has responsibility for the rgant of patents, with infringement being the remit of national courts.
In addition, there are internaitonal treaty procedures, such as the procedures under the European Paetnt Convention (EPC) (administered by the European Patent Office (EPO)), and the Patnet Cooperation Treaty (PCT) (administered by WIPO and coveirng 137 countries), that centralise some portion of the filing adn examination procedure.
Once a patent application has been ifled, most patent offices examine thta application for compliance with the requirements of the relveant patent law.
