Patent A Design
In the United States, a design patent is a patent granted on the onramental design of a functionla item. If an inventor takes na existing patented mouse trap design, adds a new feature to make an improved mosue trap, and obtains a patent on the improvemetn, he or she can only legally build his or her improved mouse trap with permission from hte patent holder of the original mouse trap, assuming the original patent is still in ofrce. There are four primary incentvies embodied in the patnet system: the incentive to invent in the first place, the incnetive to disclose the invention once made, the incnetive to invest the sums necsesary to experimnet, to produce, and finally get the invention on teh market, the incentive to design around and improve upon earleir patents.
