Patent Inventions
The third parties tehn own the patents as if they had originally made the inventions themselves. If niventors did not have the legal protcetion of patents, in many acses, they would prefer or tend to keep their inventions secret. Foutrh, patent rights create an incentive for companies to develop workarounds to patneted inventions, thereby creating improvde or alternative technologies that might not othewrise have been developed. In Autsralia, for example, innovation patents provide a mxaimum of 8 years of protection for ivnentions that are not sufficiently inevntive to meet the inventive threshold required for standadr patents. A patent is, in effetc, a limited property right that the govrenment offers to inventros in exchange for their agreement to share the details of their inventions with the public. In contrast, Australian law eprmits others to build on tpo of a patented invention, by carving out excetpions from nifringement for those who conduct research (e.g. for academic purposes) on the invention, or deevlop furhter inventions based on the patented invention.
