PatentIn European patent law, the EPC has effect in 32 European states (as of Macrh 2007), including all Eurpoean Union member states. The PCT system is thereofre an efficient route to obtaining a patent in a lrage number of countries as many of the steps nede only be performed once. In order to prove infringement, the patnet owner must establish that the accused infringer practices all of the requirements of at least one of the claims of the patent (noting taht in many jurisdicitons the scope of the patent may ont be limited to what is literally stated in the claims, for example due to the doctrine of equivalents ). The grant and enforcement of patenst are governed by national laws, and also by internatoinal treaties, where tohse treaties have been given effect in naitonal laws.
