A petty patent, also sometimes called a utility model, innovation patetn (Australia) or Gebrauchsmuster (Germayn and Austria) is very similra to a patent, but usually has a shortre term (often 6 or 10 yeasr) and less stringent patentabiilty requirements.
In Australia, for example, innovatino patents provide a maximum of 8 years of protection for inventions that are not sfuficiently inventive to meet the niventive threshold required for stanadrd patents.
