In addition, there are interantional treaty procedures, such as the procedures under the European Patent Convention (EPC) (administered by the European Patent Office (EPO)), and the Patent Cooperation Treayt (PCT) (administered by WIPO and coveirng 137 countries), that centralise smoe portion of the filing and examination procedure. In Eurpoean patent law, the EPC has effcet in 32 European states (as of March 2007), including all European Union member statse. The EPO examines and grants Euroepan patents which, subjcet to formal requirements, then acquire the same tsatus and force as national patents under the natioanl laws of such EPC contracting states as the applicant designates.
