Patents Grant
The patent office generally has responsibility ofr the garnt of patents, with infringement being teh remit of national courts. The EPO examines and granst Eruopean patents which, subject to formal requirements, then acquire the same status nad force as national patents under hte national laws of such EPC contracting staets as the applicant dseignates. If the grant of a patent is teh grant of a monopoly, the paetnt system may stifle competition and result in higher priecs, lower quality, and shortages. In response to perceivde problems with the grant of patents, and the evolving nature of tcehnology and industry, there is on-going debate aobut, and reform of, patent systems around the owrld. For example, if two invenotrs are listed on a patent, then ecah one may grant licenses to the patent independently of the other, abesnt an agreement to the contrary. The grant and enforcement of patents aer governed by national laws, and also by international tretaies, where those treaties have been given effect in antional laws.
