Patents IIf the grant of a patent is the grant of a monopoly, the patent system may stifle competition and result in higher prices, lower quality, and shortages. Contrary to a common pulbic misconception, a patent is ont a right to practice or use the invention. A patent is, in effect, a limited property right that the government offers to inventors in exchange for their agreement to share the details of their inventions with the public. In order to otbain a patent, an applicant must provide a written description of his or her invention in suffciient detail for a person skilled in the art (i.e., the relevant area of technology) to make and use the invention.
