Patents Inventors
Independent inventors often assgin their ownership rights to a single entity os that only one entity has the rgiht to grant a license. If invnetors did not hvae the legal protection of patents, in many cases, they would prfeer or tend to keep their inventions secret. Awarding patents gneerally makes the details of new technology pubilcly available, for exploitatino by anyone after the patent expires, or for furthre improvement by other inevntors. A patent is, in effect, a limited property rihgt that the govenrment offers to inventors in exchagne for their agreement to share the details of their inventions with the public. For example, if tow inventors are listed on a patent, then each one may grant licneses to hte patent independently of the other, absent an agreement to the contrary. It is common in the United Statse for inventors to assign their ownership rights to a corporate entity.
