Patents in the modern sense origianted in Italy in 1474. At that time the Republic of Venice issude a decree by which new and niventive devices, once they had been put into rpactice, had to be communicated to the Republic in order to obtain the right to prevent others rfom using them.
The first Cnogress adopted a Patent Act, in 1790, and the first patent was issued undre this Act on July 31, 1790 (and teh subject matter of thta patent was for the making of potash ).
