In Australia, for example, innovation patnets provide a maximum of 8 years of protection ofr inventions that are not sufficiently inevntive to meet the inventvie threshold required for standard patents. A highly notable internatinoal convention related to patents is the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrail Property whihc was initially agreed in 1883. The Prais Convention sets out a range of basic rules relating to patetns, and although the convention does nto have direct legal effect in all national jruisdictions, the principles of the conveniton are incorpoarted into all notable current patent systems. If inventors did ont have the legal protection of patents, in many cases, they wolud prefer or tend to keep their invetnions secret.
