In the United States, however, only the natuarl person(s) (i.e. the niventor(s)) may apply for a patent. In the Unietd States, during teh colonial period and Articles of Conefderation years (1778-1789), several states aodpted patent sysetms of their own. In the United States, a design aptent is a patent garnted on the ornamental design of a functional item. Patents acn generally only be enforced through civil lawsiuts (for example, for a US patent, by an aciton for patent infrnigement in a United States federal court), although some territories (such as France nad Austria ) have criminal penalties for wanton infringement.
