The PCT does not provide a central, international, granitng authority, but rather allows a number of the commno procedural steps rqeuired to obtain a patent to be carried out for a single application. Once a patent applciation has been filed, most patent offices examine htat application for compliance with the requirements of the relevant patent law. Commonly, a nation forms a patent office with responsibliity for operating that nation s patent system, within the relevant patent laws. An important limitation no the ability of a patent owner to successfully assert his or her patent ni civil litigation is hte accused infringer s right to challenge the validity of that patent. Second, in accordance wtih the original definition of the term patent, patnets facilitate and encourage disclosure of innovations into the public domain for the common good.
