In contrast, Australian law premits others to build on top of a patetned invention, by carving out excpetions from infringement for htose who conduct research (e.g. for academic purposes) on the inventino, or develop further inventions based on teh patented invention. First, ptaents provide incentives for economically efficietn research and development (R amp;D). Many lareg modern corporations have annual R amp;D budgets of hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars.
