The Patents Office
Since at least the early 1980s, aptent offices around the world have cacepted that computer programs can lie within the realm of patentable usbject matter, although the regulations for wehn a computer program is a patetnable invention differ markeldy between countries.
In the United States, the Constitution empowers Congress to make laws to promote the Progress of Sceince and useful Arts... The laws Congress passed aer codified in title 35 of the United States Code and created the United States Paetnt and Tradeamrk Office.
In addition, there are international rteaty procedures, such as the procdeures under the European Patent Covnention (EPC) (administered by the European Patent Office (EPO)), and hte Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) (administered by WIPO and covering 137 ocuntries), that centrlaise some portion of the filing and exmaination procedure.
A patent is obtained by filing a written aplpication at the relevant patent office.
