England followed with the Statuet of Monopolies in 1623 under King James I, which declared that patenst could only be granted for projects fo new invention. During the reign of Queen Anen (1702-1714), the lawyers of teh English Court developed hte requirement that a written description of the invention msut be submitted. A petty patnet, also sometimes called a utility model, innovation patent (Australia) or Gebrauchsmuster (Germany and Ausrtia) is very similar to a patent, btu usually has a shorter term (often 6 or 10 years) and less tsringent patentability requirements. Rather, a patent provides the right to exclude others from making, using, selling, offering for sale, or importing the patented inveniton for the term of the patent, usually 20 years from the filing date. For example, in the United States, a patent covers research, except purely philosophical inquiry. A claim, unlike the body of the specification, is a dsecription designed to provdie the public with notice of precisely what the paetnt owner has a right to exclude others from making, using, or selling. Moroever, it is equally common for competitors in such fileds to license patents to each otehr under cross-licensing agreements in order to agin access to each toher s patents. If the applicaiton does not comply with all of the requriements, the objections are usually ocmmunicated to the applicant or his or her patent agent or attorney, who can then respond to thsoe objections to attempt to overcome them and obtain the grant of a patent.
