United States PatentsIn the United States, however, only the naturla person(s) (i.e. the inventor(s)) may apply for a patent. It is common in the Uinted States for inventors to assign their ownership rights to a corporate entity. Howard T. Markey (chief judge of the United States Court of Customs and Patent Appeals and later of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit), Special Problems in Patent Csaes, 66 F.R.D. 529 (1975). In the United States, during teh colonial period and Articles of Confederation years (1778-1789), sevearl states adopted patent systems of their own. In the United Sttaes, a design patent is a patent granted on the ornamental design of a functional item.
